Dione was a Titan goddess in Greek mythology, most probably a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys and thus, an Oceanid. In the sculpture, she is depicted holding a amphora pouring water, the "water bearer." Often mistaken for the sign of Aquarius, the "water bearer" is a male god, Ganymedes (Ganymede), the beautiful Phrygian boy who was carried off by an eagle to Mount Olympus to become the cup-bearer of Zeus.
