Stock Photography Inquiries

A word about stock photography

If you are reading this, you may be thinking of using one of my photographs on a billboard, printed ad, magazine, calendar, or other form of commercial advertising. If so, I would love to hear from you.

Most of my color landscape photography is available as "stock images." These images begin with the letters "dnr", "knr", or "cnr". Write to me for a quotation based on usage. Send me as much information as possible, including:

Quotes are based on reasonable and customary stock photography market prices, but probably a bit on the higher end of the price spectrum due to my lower volume and higher quality. I endeavor to make your negotiation for stock photography as painless as possible. But, read on...

Dealing directly with the artist

I apologize in advance.

You want to what with my photograph? I got up at 4am, dragged myself up and down thousands of miles of the New England coast on a few hours of sleep, three cups of coffee, while fighting off man-eating mosquitoes, scaling cliffs, dodging waves, dealing with the weather and running from irate local residents who have declared hunting season on anyone carrying a tripod through their town. Now, you tell me you want to take away my children, my hard work of sweat, blood and tears then turn it into commercial advertising to sell hamburgers? Do you think you have enough money to rip the soul out of my living and breathing body?

But, I digress.

I sympathize with you. You are an advertising executive and you have the daunting task of "cold calling" me. Are you sure you want to do this? The majority of buyers of stock photography deal with agents and clearing houses so they don't have to deal with people like... well, people like me - the artists, the egos, the pangs of agony felt by "selling out to the establishment"

My philosophy is to sell one really great photograph for a thousand dollars, rather a thousand stock photos for a buck apiece. Photographs which are not part of the "dnr" or "cnr" series generally involve model releases and usage restrictions which may prohibit stock usage. All photographs which begin with the letter "h" are hand crafted black and white photographs which are available for fine-art prints for hotel chains and the like - but not stock photography.

There are exceptions. Life is complex. Write to me if you have a special situation. Perhaps you have an art gallery in New York or perhaps you are a book publisher who has something to offer me. Maybe you are a rock band looking for graphics for a poster or "album cover."

Write to me or take a deep breath and give me a call. I will try to give you my best price on stock photography.

Technical Stuff - Let's talk about resolution

knr46 x 31inches100dpi
knr15 x 10inches300dpi
cnr125 x 83inches100dpi
cnr42 x 27inches300dpi
(1)226 x 226inches100dpi
(1)18 x 18feet100dpi
(1)75 x 75inches300dpi
(1)6 x 6feet300dpi
(2)480 x 384inches100dpi
(2)40 x 32feet100dpi
(2)160 x 128inches300dpi
(2)13 x 10feet300dpi

Digital photography is best for website and Internet publications. Any of my dnr series can suit your needs. But, if you want me to put a photograph on a 60' billboard, stock photography isn't going to do it for you. I can shoot up to 18 feet at 100dpi, but at this point you'd need to hire me for an assignment. My cnr series is great for up to 10 x 7 feet at 100dpi. Bigger? I would have to research the job for you.
